Our Clarkston, MI, gastroenterologists, Dr. Veslav Stecevic, Dr. Mihaela Batke and Dr. Naveen Reddy, explain how the process works.

How can I get rid of hemorrhoids without surgery?

Non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment in Livonia, MIWe use the CRH O'Regan System to treat hemorrhoids in our Clarkston office. The system uses rubber bands that cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid, which causes it to shrink and fall off. Other banding systems use clamps with metal teeth. Although those systems certainly work, the metal teeth tend to cause pain and bleeding. The CRH O'Regan System uses suction instead of clamps to hold the tissue in place when the rubber bands are attached. This gentler approach is much more comfortable for patients and reduces bleeding.

What types of hemorrhoids are treated?

Although the rubber bands are only applied to internal hemorrhoids, the system also helps treat external hemorrhoids. Once the band is applied, both the internal and external portions of the hemorrhoid shrink.

How can I tell if I have hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids occur when the veins in your rectum or anus swell due to increased pressure. The problem can occur if you strain during bowel movements due to constipation, have frequent diarrhea, are overweight, sit for long periods or have experienced childbirth. You won't be able to see internal hemorrhoids but you can tell that they're there if you notice bright red blood on your stools. Other signs of hemorrhoids include anal itching, pain around your anus and small bumps or lumps around your anus.

What's the recovery period like?

You may notice a slightly achy feeling in your rectum or a feeling of fullness for about a day after your treatment. Over-the-counter pain medications can help relieve these symptoms if you happen to experience them. It usually only takes a few days for the hemorrhoid to shrink and the rubber band to fall off. Most people don't even notice that the band has fallen off. Once the band falls off, you'll no longer experience hemorrhoid symptoms.
